A cloudy day prompted me to write “Sight Reduced”.

Sight Reduced

I long for clouds in the sky
a haze to obscure the sun
the yellow orb kept out of sight
total dark is held at bay
sight reduced by the sky’s firmament
while the land forgets its name.

The extremes would be no more
no brilliance pressed to amaze
or shade to lure terror’s breath
in this realm I’d take comfort
that mortals may scurry forth
without the lord to judge their world.

I’ll live my life in my way
angelic hosts are blinded
as their justice is escaped
until the clouds are no more
once again the fire’s restored
to rule both the high and low.

The first line of "Your Youth" was prompted by a verse in the song "Call Yourself A Lover" by Profiles. The result is a mixed bag, but it does accurately speak to some of the emotions I’m feeling.

Your Youth

You were just another face in all my days
one more to which I'll have to say goodbye
from the other side of the one-way veil
when my final end is met on the long march

I've seen the young faces that give me hope
when those my age seem to deny the same
bitterness at what's been now lost to them
weighs on my heart while the saplings compensate

with those my age would seem to be my fate
though my world may appear different
angst becomes the companion I can't shake
when self owned loss is a shared malady

I've traveled on these roads far many miles
accumulated the dust heavy on my boots
now I long to lay down my heavy head
bidding your youth goodbye when I pass away.

“Immersion Blinds” is about the inclination of conservative parties to strike out at a world that defies their accepted tenets. Their struggle has the goal of maintaining the status quo. At the other end of this perceived contest are people who suffer injury and death, acceptable causalities for those who are blind.

Immersion Blinds

When the entire world is safe
normative in all its realms
immersion blinds those within
to realities that are hazardous
when speech is weaponized
blunt to the bearer of the words
a mere game to win or lose
losers must be found to play.

This imbalance hides from sight
for those in power’s seat
they care to maintain a place
with conservative as their motif
when dialogue flows one way
fears are not the same
it’s about power sought for self
endangering those on the fringe.

The slight becomes ego’s wound
asking for harsh recourse
dogma states all the rules
tenets prodding actions on
the hydra with a thousand heads
the crowd is the bully’s friend
sent to suppress a minority
unable to resist in the same.

War becomes their sole career
gains are notches on the belt
blood is the satisfaction
taken on the edge of talk
when the entire world is safe
except for the victims sought
immersion blinds those within
to the crimes they celebrate.

“Cringing Beast” was prompted by an experience in which a friend said something nice to me. My reaction was one of disbelief, almost anger. I realized that my self-worth was misbehaving.

Cringing Beast

Forgive me for my angry thoughts
when you reached with good intent
the snarling comes from deep inside
reaction to the outreached hand

self-worth is a cringing beast
too long left to itself
shy to leave its secure lair
indulge in realm of company

comfort’s found in privacy
with no one there to complement
forcing angst to step aside
allow the esteem to come to front

when the invite is put forth
it’s no wonder that I bark
asked to relate to a world
with kinder thoughts than I indulge.

“Scales Upset” is about the critical voices only heard in our heads.

Scales Upset

Can I be right within my wrong
to redeem what’s been lost?
asks the voices held within
behind the mask I present
thoughts compete, the good and bad
mix to ugly in sadder times
while in the glad the smile prevails
hiding angst from other men.

No forgiveness will be had
while notions swirl within my head
echo chamber that does not mute
when the screams invoke within
the harshest critic is myself
berating actions not yet expressed
stealing sleep from my night
adding misery when sun is high.

The phantoms of remembered past
array in lines against the light
deepest dark becomes my life
while the question has no reply
I wonder if the end is near
paying for my inner sins
this would be fit, karma’s way
to balance scales that I’ve upset.

The disconnect between the beauty we have, and what we see, is often due to the standards presented by the commercial realm. Sometimes, to appreciate our own beauty, we need to look at ourselves through a friend’s eyes instead of basing our self-worth on self-serving merchants.

Jar of Cream

Feeling comfortable in your skin
having calm with what God gave
is the challenge of mortal folk
aggravated by commerce
when are we swayed by the lies
instead of listening to our chums.

Society sets the highest bars
asking pockets to turn outward
to buy products most don’t need
imploring us to hate what’s seen
love coming from a jar of cream
this is a falsehood advertised.

Turn aside from this farce
it’s not why we’re here to live
celebrate self by due recourse
with the friends who truly love
these are your allies, not the sales
sharing smiles for who are.

Blue Video is about the possible “adult” tapes, now perhaps in the public eye, that I made during my fabled career as a college stripper.

Blue Video

Transgressions in the bloom of youth
caught on tape, blue video
hidden in the tombs of time
now come to light in my old age
actions meant to flip some cash
when flesh was bared to camera's eye
revealing all in survival's name
now intrudes on a present day.

Yet there I am, in a smudged frame
Father Time has had his way
the newness of the internet
harbors sins of history
just as my body has borne term's brunt
echoes of the college are besmirched
the truth is told through the grain
then baby-faced, I was love's whore.

No longer in the store's back room
behind the curtain meant to screen
innocence from the other side
life's desires for nudity
when data highways are the path
to the hubs where passions feed
it's no wonder that my feat
may be viewed in modern times.

Now looking back, I wonder how
the choices made will reflect
on how the world considers me
a quarter century past my peak
I've walked away from that place
no longer captured for all to see
though predilections may still creep
I hold them close, now discreet.

“Separate Shores” is about outward resignation versus inner pain.

Separate Shores

Resignation wears a mask
to hide the sadness deep inside
I'll tell you of the disconnects
between two lands, separate shores

making merry for the world
if only the interior was the same
the intimate is soul’s poison
while joy is the cold disguise

satisfaction is the outward face
see the smile presented there
the true feelings crave the dark
veering from the telling light

please assure that you're all alone
before disclosing what’s in the core
passions are locked away
when they conflict with the world.

“The Saddest Laugh” was prompted by two events. The first event was a friend writing about their discontent with the New-Age mantra “love all people because we’re equal in our stardust status”. They thought that the sentiment ignored conditioned racism, with love really being “owning your conditioned ignorant racist bullshit and asking others to own theirs”. The same day I listened to “The Tracker” by Chad Zunker. It is a story about a young man, in his 20s, who was a survivor of the foster home system. He goes against a political conspiracy and (eventually) wins because he struggled through his early life. In a flash-back, his adult girlfriend says that he should forget his past. He can’t, and by twist of story, succeeds where other would fail because of that past. Both of these themes, that of being blind to other peoples’ struggles, and the fragility of the privileged state, are somewhere in my poem.

The Saddest Laugh

If survival is not a task
part of how a person lives
one can wonder if privilege
is their stomping ground
the red flag is lack of risk
a lack of tears, retaining life
bones not broken, honor held
this isn't how the others live.

The calm persists in ivory towers
blood isn't spilled for freedom's cause
because elevation has its perks
freedom from the trials of men
immunity from the pains of life
that confound the unfortunates
are the realm of pillared folk
who may deny the anguished yokes.

Rights inferred without thought
the hand of fate plays favorites
with greatest joke played on all
is a belief of a shared life
here is the saddest laugh
the protected are contributors
facilitators that can resist
the very pain they inflict.

Now consider where you stand
when compared to wounded ones
I honor those who battle life
thus inflicted by catching up
contrasting with bequeathed ease
with fickle fates this may change
count your blessings while you can
while looking out for the aggrieved.

I decided to document something something scandalous in my poem “Radical Honesty”. What is Radical Honesty? Radical Honesty is a kind of communication that is direct, complete, open and expressive. How did I do? Hmmm.

Radical Honesty

I’ll write a confession
scratch the words with a pen
declarations I’ll preface
with disclosure of what I mean

from the realm of privacy
once put to ears of the divine
clerics no longer bear witness
to the life I choose to share

honesty from the bleeding edge
these admissions may seem radical
I’ll lie no longer to protect
the image projected upon the world

perhaps I’ll apologize
penance for the thoughts I have
with these statements I’ll exit
reducing stress by contrition’s breath

June is National LGBT Pride Month. I didn’t participate in any marches. I honor my friends who did, and I offer up the poem “To Those Seen” in reflection of why it’s important to march in Pride.

To Those Seen

It’s important to show ourselves
even when we are afraid
the authenticate self is the goal
though attacks may come from this
“please don’t rub this in our face”
is the majority’s sad request
put to the ones in the shadows
a minority long suppressed.

Now we march in unity
with those who can’t take their place
intersections ask for more
outside of those who first bled
celebrating victories marked with blood
acknowledging the past and the present
looking towards the better future
inspire others to express themselves.

It’s not been right, change was required
to get us here, allow all to wed
a level field amongst the kin
reform at hand, what is next?
community rewards itself
present yourself to the world
in this march all may convene
rights are granted to those seen

“In The End” was prompted by the comment made by by Rufas Edmisten (Deputy Chief Counsel, Watergate Committee): “Sometimes impressions are killers, almost as much as much as the actual.”

In The End

Wear the masks at your peril
they’re for play, that’s the plan
make a point to scare the rubes
while there’s risk you’ll confront

today’s dreams may not last
of power gained, the earth your own
it’s all borrowed from below
from the one taking souls

presentation is the door
revelation of what’s inside
even as the acts are mimed
they promise what will surely come

the sharpest knives are not seen
seeming dull when waved about
slicing wounds upon the self
cutting deep to spill the blood

this is the risk of mockery
embracing acts most condemn
though the line is not crossed
the stakes are same in the end.

“The Lists” is about taking stock of life, with dissection of “reasons why” determining a course.

The Lists

Here I stand to make a choice
between the dark and the light
in that space the roles may switch
from the norm that life requests

it’s a choice of pros and pros
solely held in my hand
making lists for each point
reasons for, not against

the balance point is in my head
a question mark in life’s quest
the metronome that ticks my life
a clock unwinding in God’s sight

ask me now how I feel
the positive may leave my lips
another time would be different
the negative I’d share with you

back to the lists, all the pros
asking which will be the light
as the darkness bides its time
in the future or in the now.

“One Resolve” is about a decision I must make each and every day!

One Resolve

When I wake up I plan the day
important matters on the mind
waiting patiently through the night
begging action after dreams

when the balm of sleep recedes
curtains opened, sun comes in
the moon has left the wide sky
now I’m roused to decide

I’ll declare life’s verdicts
resolutions to complete
when adulting challenges
determinations are declared

before my life is duly planned
decrees to judge the whole of life
there is one resolve before the rest
deciding where to lunch that day.

I’ve written many poems about beauty. “Beauty Seen” is yet another one, this time considering if beauty can be properly presented beyond the original form.

Beauty Seen

I wish I could sketch the beauty seen
or take a picture that would preserve
the scope of all I've witnessed here

my life is experienced in splendor's realm
in my mind I am the unworthy visitor
an intruder walking halls I should leave

the presence of form and nature is too much
for this child with fragile feet of clay
with tools that fail to portray the grace

so here I am in my journaled quest
to express what cannot be told
the indescribable that I adore

I will capture what I'm allowed
by turn of phrase or photo frame
to show the world how it's blessed.

The draft of the poem “Beauty’s Cause” was originally titled “Beauty’s Curse”. Beauty has a way of causing problems for those with the quality. Others commit terrible acts in pursuit of beauty, both to themselves and others. The final version of the poem considers these states, offering in response an explanation as to the need for beauty.

Beauty's Cause

I could curse the universe
ask why beauty is my bane
forever present, yet separate
from my world where I’m restrained
raving like a lunatic
claim unfairness in God's realm
that such loveliness would be put
out of reach of grasping hands.

With this said as a prelude
I'll admit that I am demurred
to applying this mind set
in how I choose to view the world
I'll not damn the divine for a chasm
when none is present to be seen
for in the space of years' unfolding
a plan is revealed to connect the dots.

Change is the only constant
while I age there is renewal
transformation is requisite
though my existence may seem superfluous
all things depart in their time
as the new takes to the stage
flow is the director's charge
and I'm an actor taking leave.

Rebirth is lured by beauty's breadth
this is a truth that none contest
without this charm all life would end
this is not what I'd like to see
it is the order in which I'm thrust
resistance is the Devil's game
to curse, to fight, to do wrong
does not serve beauty in its cause.

“I Write Tonight” is about why I choose to write poetry on a daily basis. One day I won’t, and my poems will stand for something in that time.

I Write Tonight

Another turn has found its way
I'll mark this day with a poem
looking back at where I came
leaving words for coming years
as prose allows for stories told
I have several to disclose
echoing what I've written prior
in the stanzas to follow here.

Honesty is my downfall
the muse requesting far too much
from the poet seeking truth
found inside, revealed to you
what cannot speak in common words
the odes allow on lyric tongue
pressed to state all there is
who I am, what I love.

Both the good and the bad
the horrific and the glad
have sprung from pen, put to page
please forgive my tirades
while I view what God has wrought
put upon by our frailty
it is no wonder I am amazed
by the breadth of life's range.

I share to alert the world
they're not alone in their space
this is true, but there is more
as the poems speak to myself
asking for the forbearance
to hang on another day
stating all the whys I can't
to provide the will to live.

What's put here is for today
remembering where I've come from
why I do this these written acts
while the muse moves my hand
for one day I'll be silent
no longer press the quill to task
then you and I may look back
to see these words I write tonight.

“Dark Flute” is about the seething nature of the beast that derails sanity and hijacks the mind.

Dark Flute

This is not the companion I would choose
but it's the one that I'm chained to
by virtue of unwanted injuries
now held close in sour memories

the causes are lost in the halls of time
forgotten by those who did the worse harm
sum of wrath now so much larger than
what others witnessed have come before

fury expressed in the unbidden snarl
with a twitch from the responding eye
I become an animal in temper’s grip
last human visage stripped by the rage

they would say that flesh’s nature was the failing
the past tilting the scales towards the worse
so many fingers influence the chafe
prodding madness from Azathoth’s dark flute

the demons may find joy in this circumstance
while angels weep waterfalls at the lost love
bystanders to the greatest blunder made by man
anger walking too close by my side.

During a dream I traveled to a world beneath the earth’s surface. The poem “Land Beneath” shares aspects of the dream.

Lower Bond

I’ll meet you there, along the path
boulevards will shepherd us
two lost souls beneath the fray
invoked by peril to a land below

search for the hidden underground
entrance under the danger words
just stand still and you’ll sink
to a place few suspect

you’ll descend to the nether ream
known to those who travel there
though more than you would think
beneath the staid reality

visiting is the only option
for some reason none will reside
instead they travel here to there
past the echoes of bygone days

it’s a world lost to time
lodged beneath what you know
left behind to find its way
nothing changed, there to stay

at the end we’ll ascend
no longer will the twilight shine
seek the light with sun’s warmth
leave behind our lower bond.

Possible friends, of many depths, are introduced into our lives on an ongoing basis. I have to say that I’ve not always done justice to those who approached me with the desire to know me better. In that place I feel more disappointment than shame. The silver lining is that there is still time to know them in this present moment, before time removes them from my life. Why do I struggle though? The poem, “Found a Friend”, speaks to the commitment requested by friendship.

Found a Friend

I found the friend I should keep
if Fate allows, that fickle fiend
introductions did not promise
joyous outcomes in future’s sight
the invitation is heartfelt
contrary to nature’s bent
where the strangers walk about
none see another, until now.

Fate led me to water’s edge
then asked me to drink too deep
I approached with my fear
knowing that my life could change
the depths dropped out of sight
where this led I could not say
so much unknown in the pledge
to stand beside a new ally
from the parched to the drowned
lips once cracked would be submerged
drinking in what was absent
swimming deep in liquid bliss.

Here is the rub, what I hinted
that future hides beyond our sight
in its hands, the good and bad
what’s chosen now will be revealed
a choice is put to both of us
Fate gives short warning in query
pledging nothing in return
I’ve found a friend, what do I do?
