The poem “Transition in Latitude” was inspired by the thought that a fuller acceptance by society would include acknowledgment of my being a work in progress.

Transition in Latitude

The choice is made in the soul
if a decision is the right word
instead a knowing represents
identity that fits the best

fully vested to the outcome
even though the outside lags
knowledge is held in the heart
asks for acceptance to come first

separation of biased thoughts
from the person that I am
attacks a target that does not exist
even as I must persist

an integration is my lot
with a hope the world will grasp
the whole offered up for view
with transition in latitude.

The poem “Foundations” is about the comfort found from mentors and more experienced travelers of the same path.  Without their aid, the person seeking to find themselves is at the mercy of external and internal phobias.

Foundations

When foundations are not present
by the virtue of life’s path
self-assurance becomes adrift
among the shoals of consequence
a destination is partially glimpsed
across the span of rolling swells

once placid waters endure the storm
by aftershocks of the ground shook
paradise at last found
still shrouded in the heavy fog
without a guide a way is lost
across the tempest of life tossed

the hazards are from lights
leading to reefs of blight
with no interest for the welfare
of the voyager who seeks to dare
the safe journey may be assured
by the beacons pointing to the shore

with the knowledge of the path
traveled in the distant past
these foundations disavow
the ugly lies that have no love
in their place the self will find
the assurance of soul and mind.

The poem “The Choice” was prompted by a YouTube video about the choices presented to many transgender people.  They can hide or they can attempt to stealth.  Neither is a malicious choice meant to antagonize society.  They are instead methods of survival in the face of a normative that denies rights that most assumed to be available to all.

The Choice

The choice made of identity
one or the other to fit in
is made when survival asks
individuals to protect their ranks

the paths opened have their risks
with a threat at dagger’s edge
to sanity or life’s continuance
neither salves the normative

there’s no attempt to trick the group
instead the ruse is hoped adequate
to shield the self from the diatribes
prompted by ignorance of the tribe

identity is clearly known
in the heart of the one
while safety asks for compromise
to flaunt or hide against the knife.

The poem “Patch of Ground” was inspired by a poem by Catarine Hancock with the lines “stop comparing yourself to girls like her…  you are supposed to look like you.”

Patch of Ground

Comparison sets the bar
between the haves and the have-nots
when the measure is biased towards
standards held by the high ground

appearance associated with the face
or movements set by mark of grace
offer a hill to look upon
stating merit is miles above

those contrasts of altitude
focused on beatitudes
those attributes of blessedness
perceived by those with less

the answer is to celebrate
qualities that separate
identity is held by the one
accountable to their patch of ground.

The poem “The Sum Being” was inspired by concept that forgiveness is required in order to be right with the world in regards to orientation and gender identity.  The non-normative is not broken or sinful.  They are just a different normative.

The Sum Being

Forgiveness was not my request
solicitation as a bequest
from damnation imagined by
those without a reference to my life

the offer smacks of hyperbole
a bargain made with misery
based on assumptions without a care
for the lives cast to disrepair

to be washed from myself
cleansed until nothings left
has no attraction if life awaits
beyond the judgment of conjured fates

deny the pardons filled with fault
creating guilt where there is none
clemency offered asks one to admit
the sum being is villainous.

The poem “A New Deck” was inspired by a series of dreams that confirm that my life could be different.

A New Deck

Travels far from the home place
ask the traveler to contemplate
what holds them to the land
from which the path first led

identity is bound to change
morph to fit the present day
diverging from the fair wishes
of those who saw the natal day

these circumstances are enough
even though the crowd protests
to establish a new reality
so much more set in verity

those departures that life insists
relevance found that persists
is the hand now surely dealt
from the top of a new deck.

The poem “Marionettes” was inspired by a dream during which my actions were directed by a female therapist.  My waking thoughts turned this nocturnal vision into an awareness that I am seeking to relearn gender.

Marionettes

Marionettes on genders’ strings
made to dance as new offspring
by writ of birth the die was cast
setting in motion life’s circumstance

this declaration that odds prescribe
mostly right some of the time
this is no comfort for those betrayed
when assumptions rule the day

now the puppets move about
pulled by strings spun from doubt
those filaments that serve few
both watchers and marks confused

the latter must fight to know
an escape from thread’s control
when they pull against the conceived
following what the heart believes.

The poem “Compelled Normality” was inspired by a friend’s remark, “until you have buried someone you love, you won't understand how hard a Holiday, Birthday, or any other day is without them.”

Compelled Normality

The time without the loved one
once they’re buried in the ground
demands a toil from the soul
when the self has been interned

put six feet down lest the world
do the same without reserve
with permanence born of fear
by dogma too long revered

these sentiments that massacre
deviants from the conservative
asked only to step aside
from living large against the lie

the walking dead seem to survive
in aftermath of suicide
now the days are self-deplored
compelled normality forevermore.

The poem “Monsters Wear Human Form” is about my retreat from presenting my alternative side.

Monsters Wear Human Form

Survival asks for a retreat
finding shelter lest a defeat
destroy more than what’s due
when hatred is the attitude

that consensus of the crowd
now embolden to speak out loud
by the virtue of leader’s sway
breadth of humanity is betrayed

to be different is now enough
damnation granted on a whim
the result when fear compounds
confirmed wishes of the crowd

this withdrawal to survive
brings a tear to my eye
the omens state all should beware
while monsters wear human form.

The poem “Acceptance” was inspired by friends and associates presenting acceptance of my alternative sides even as I sense that they struggle with frames of reference to truly understand.

Acceptance

Acceptance by friends is most kind
given they don’t know my mind
even as the questions reign
traditions felt in harsh complaint

ill intent is not the goal
as reactions come and go
when the source defies a life
expectations become a lie

those deviations from the norm
presented to a perplexed world
are only measured in this way
while self verity defines my day

the combination may instruct
by actions lived the deal is struck
acceptance offered in the storm
revelation as worlds are turned.

The poem “Fondest Wishes” is about the desires of a trans person to be in a form other than that realized at birth.  Some apparent non-binary individuals wish for a day that a switch could be thrown and fondest wishes be realized.

Fondest Wishes

If I could wake to the day
to see a body that does not betray
perception of who should stand
in the mirror at my command

the inner image brought to the front
society’s reaction would be blunt
no understanding of what should be
if fondest wishes were complete

this yearning is masked by paradox
living between the pull of poles
this appears to be the goal
treading water at cost of soul

if only dawn of day finally bring
a transformation most would regret
switching places to finally find
nirvana on the other side.

The poem “The Measured Size” was inspired by the poet’s own discouraging attempts at attaining an equivalence of beauty to smaller sized women.

The Measured Size

Subtractions to the measured size
put to the body in respite
imaginations of what should be
are disproved by verity

searching for worthiness
in mirror’s view of countenance
majorities look across the fence
at verdant spreads they can’t express

those increments of number’s bane
stating size that damns the same
whether the measure's minimal
or double-digit on the frame

each desires reduction’s balm
shifting shapes in full resolve
to meet the image far beyond
reality’s capacity to respond.

The poem “Confirmed in Dress” was inspired by a dream that involved wearing a beautiful dress ensemble, made that more perfect with beauty makeover.  The poem also admires those who seek to display their beauty in less dress, enduring the world with burlesque displays.

Confirmed in Dress

Clothes evoke chains of decency
propriety the world desires to see
a battle that’s surely lost
when spirit rises to pay the cost

the norm embraces decorum’s plea
to seek the blanket of propriety
others reject this notion to reveal
the individual not brought to heel

they may choose to show the flesh
or present the gender felt in the breast
these lofty goals bend the rules
arousing passions that may confuse

even while the celebrants
those who face mistaken jeers
know their choice is surely blessed
with heart and mind confirmed in dress.

The poem “Mountain Heights” is about the duality of both wanting to be like somebody and having a deep admiration for their beauty.  The two may be intertwined, with a peace only found in the honesty of admitting each voice.

Mountain Heights

Lust comes in many forms
some pedestrian and others scorned
each with a root that demands
possession taken with outcomes damned

this tumult is the stomping ground
of the souls who have found
forms acquired at time of birth
deny the vision found in the heart

thus jealousy is mixed with a thirst
admiration turned to an urge
to be like that which passions seek
this metaphor of the oblique

the end result is sanity
knowledge gained when cravings peak
goals are set on mountain heights
for both the body and pined delights.

The poem “Closet of the Before” is about the discovery of self stepping out with that side and then retreating after the embedded realization conflicts with a wider world.

The Closet of the Before

Exploration of the unknown
plumbing depths once concealed
was the passion of the past
shown in displays few surpassed

the cavalcade without demure
exclaimed out loud for all to hear
has fallen quiet once the task
was completed with ends to last

those changes are now internalized
known to self in full resolve
even while the world decides
to disagree with pointed knives

it's no wonder the response
a retreat from consequence
includes identity's detour
to the closet of the before.

The poem “The Clay” is about the frustration of living life in a world that does not fit.

The Clay

The clay has set to damn the one
wanting something beyond their form
now that time has set the frame
with assurance of no change

except for aging that betrays
desires lost in beauty's maze
looking at the warped glass
mirrors stating the opposite

perhaps a chance once thrived
to portray the paradigm
even this is held to doubt
lost in decades far behind

now the clay is only fit
to be ground by the fist
reduced to dust as nature asks
aberrations to step aside.

The poem “Linda Waits” is about the struggle of self-discovery.  The inner knowings may arrive at a point of no-return.  While fuller realization may be delayed, the die has been cast.

Linda Waits

Linda waits beyond today
this is the sentiment of dismay
denying what's come to pass
given that the die's been cast

rolled to set the inner self
while the word denies in jest
to put self aside tears the veil
assure downfall will prevail

this surety of beingness
defies the wisdom of willingness
to embrace the lie of passing fads
when the knowing is sure to last

Linda waits for no man
already here in circumspect
wishing only to appear
live a life beyond the fear.

The poem “The Road Returns” is about the opportunity to shared alternative viewpoints with an insular group.  The traveler has a fear of being mocked for their efforts.  This trepidation is balanced against the education possible by their actions.

The Road Returns

The road returns from the north
after miles have been traversed
the traveler may be assured
that they arrive now transformed

bearing wisdom from the path
not knowing how the tribe reacts
fear is natural as the result
of transgressions imagined thus

these revelations by foreign tongue
await translation to the whole
lessons available in the heart
expressed outward for shared thoughts

the dust accumulated on the heals
proof of sights now revealed
asking only that journey’s end
instruct the whole as consequence.

The poem “A Single Night” was inspired by remarks made by the poet at two events, occasions that featured stepping out in a trans persona.

A Single Night

A single night becomes the hinge
moving past the commonplace
with a sight that deviates
from the norm that most embrace

beyond the drone of the days
where conformance brings dismay
put aside in truth’s pursuit
of relevance by joy’s display

testimony of what should be
imagined in the realm of dreams
realized without regret
then voiced to others as consequence

the promise made stakes a claim
‘if only this were every day”
now gods have heard the call
in depths of night to the beyond.

The poem “Adornment Comes” was inspired by a dream that featured an outfit with a delightful ribbon counterpoint.

Adornment Comes

Adornment comes in many forms
this step beyond nakedness
something more than garments hung
for the reasons of plain regard

decked upon a simple frame
once the base has been set
an exclamation is desired
to shift beyond boredom’s calm

wishing only to exclaim
loveliness in the bling
by the sparkle or color’s swath
splendor following this allure

beauty blessed for all to see
charisma worn as a prayer
the mantra of a greater god
when decoration is the charge.
