[livejournal.com profile] wulfwalker asked me to let everyone know that the cubs will be ready for adoption in a few weeks. I'll get more details later. The bottom line is that prospective people must be vetted by Chakotay, the cub's father and the pack's alpha male wolf-dog. Let me know if you are interested or know someone who may have an interest!

The cubs are running around the enclosure. [livejournal.com profile] wulkwalker put out some more wet dog food today. One cub smelled the food and then promptly walked THROUGH the bowl, stopped, and slurped down the wet food. The other cubs heard the noise and came running. I can't wait the see them again later this week so I can take some new pics then of the roaming kids.

Is it a really horrible thing of me that you said "Chakotay" and all I could think was "WTF does this have to do with Voyager???"

:-P

Ah... I need to correct my words. They are wolf-dog hybrids. While there is a very high percentage of wolf, the animals are still considered dogs. Check out this link to learn more about the breed:

"The view that aggressive characteristics are inherently a part of wolfdog temperament has been contested in recent years by wolfdog breeders and other advocates of wolfdogs as companion animals. Proponents of wolfdogs as pets say that the animals are naturally timid and fearful of humans, but that with proper training and responsible ownership wolfdogs can become good pets. Even in cases of wolfdogs displaying consistently dog-like behavior, they often retain the wolf's natural curiosity; driving them to dig ferociously, chew up household items such as furniture and display extreme difficulty in housebreaking."

I pity whoever adopts one of these little balls of furry trouble, although I must admit, they do look cute enough to be worth the half-eaten furniture :D

I can vouch for the statement that the wolfdogs are naturally timid and make good pets.

While the breed is better suited for outdoor life, they can adapt to the indoors. It really boils down to the individual temperament of the dog and the amount of indoor immersion early on in the cub's life.

Fair enough, I don't imagine you'd offer them as pets if they were entirely unsuited, it's just the thought that a giant bundle of exuberant joy running rampant in an enclosed space is fairly intimidating in terms of property investment :P
