kokopelle: (Cat - Felix Pace)

I was having a "Bones" marathon today while I worked in the basement. One of the episodes was about finding a body in a twenty year old high school time capsule (1987). I recognized a number of the period references as I graduated in 1983. The characters in the show talked about the types of people in High School. Seeley was accused of being "one of them". "Them" was a successful jock type who ruled the school. I was nearly the opposite. I was successful in an off-sport (cross country and track) and had a decent enough grade point average (Honor Society in my senior year). This made me a nerd/geek. Sigh... I would not have repeated the experience if given the chance. My best "revenge" for being an outsider in HS was to move onto college and become successful after graduation from there.

The odd thing is that I talked to one of "Them" at the class' ten year anniversary. During HS this guy was top jock and basically "one of them". Ten years later he was a manger at a restaurant. He told me that had admired me during HS for doing the track thing and such. Odd how things can change and where we can end up.

In my school the cross country runners were the "secret celebrities" Pretty much everyone admired them for their independance, discipline and multilevel strength. It never occurred to any of us that they didn't know that.

Parallels in your current life?

Odd how things can and DO change and where we end up! The homecoming queen who I always thought so perfect with her milky white complexion and blonde hair and petite body, while I was the ugly duck with bad complexion, mousy brown hair, and too many pounds. Twenty-five year class reunion? She is 200 lbs, mother of 5, and recently divorced from a not-exactly-successful attorney. Her hair has turned to baling wire and the milky complexion is now marred by liver spots. I, however, was a svelte 128 lbs, long brown hair that looks pretty good for an old broad, and working for the Supreme Court in a career that I love. Yep, things change and sometimes "THEY" do get their comeuppance!
