Taking pictures at dances is a real challenge because of the light levels. Dance is all about motion, and good lighting is a must for capturing the motion of dance. Dances do not have good lighting. River Falls Lodge has christmas tree style lights alighting the room. Very pretty, but very low illumination. Still, I find taking pictures to be rewarding because of the moments of human interaction that are captured. Below is one that I've titled "Shadow Dancers - Shoulders". I really really like the lines in this picture as the dancers' bodies pace themselves. A person may have to take a hundred pictures to get one like this, but the effort is well worth it!

The picture is part of a larger flickr picture set from a 7/18/09 contradance at River Falls Lodge.

So did you push the iso. Very intimate!

Yep... 1600 plus some photoshop elements tweaking of light levels with a bit of color correction and software based noise reduction. The shutter speed was 60. Not optimal for movement, but the most I was able to push the camera without losing most of the picture.

I keep forgetting to push in low light so I make up for it by taking a bazillion shots and hoping one comes out clear.

I know the feeling. While I don't average a bazillion, I probably took six to ten shots for every one that I ended up posting on the flickr picture set!

I'm right there with you. I was taking evening cemetery shots this weekend and even with 6 or so of each, some are unusable. Luckily it's close enough to go back soon.

Thanks! I've uploaded over 23,000 pictures to flickr and have taken over 23,000 (estimated). Practice makes perfect!
