kokopelle: Black Cat (cat black)

The poem “Derceto” is both a retelling of the story “The Little Mermaid” and a eulogy to those lost in fighting for the recognition of women's equality.

Derceto
Poem for Day 90 – 20141222

Sister Derceto,
denizen of the sea,
you dance on legs
of pointed knives
not visible to the naked eye.
You bleed within
where none can see the blood.
Where is your lovely voice,
the one that would pierce my heart?
Silence echoes instead
in the chambers of my heart.
You find yourself here,
this place of mute pain,
because you sought a soul.
Was the price too high
as you sought your beloved's kiss?
Slay not sleeping one
with dagger of ocean's return.
You may pass to mist,
but pain will fade also.
Your place is assured
amongst the spirits.
Neither water nor land
are your realm evermore.
Spirits of the air
join in welcome celebration.
A soul was your goal,
and in time it will be yours,
but now you are in their arms
and I stand beneath your stars.
