Poem - To Those Seen

kokopelleJune is National LGBT Pride Month. I didn’t participate in any marches. I honor my friends who did, and I offer up the poem “To Those Seen” in reflection of why it’s important to march in Pride.
To Those Seen
It’s important to show ourselves
even when we are afraid
the authenticate self is the goal
though attacks may come from this
“please don’t rub this in our face”
is the majority’s sad request
put to the ones in the shadows
a minority long suppressed.
Now we march in unity
with those who can’t take their place
intersections ask for more
outside of those who first bled
celebrating victories marked with blood
acknowledging the past and the present
looking towards the better future
inspire others to express themselves.
It’s not been right, change was required
to get us here, allow all to wed
a level field amongst the kin
reform at hand, what is next?
community rewards itself
present yourself to the world
in this march all may convene
rights are granted to those seen
