Poem - I Was Beautiful

“I Was Beautiful” is about the vagaries of social media.


I Was Beautiful

They said I was beautiful
the apple of a probing eye
though they’d never gazed upon
my figure of pure straight lines

you’d wonder how this came to be
presenting on the interface
glimpsed through electronic lens
highway of the trickster’s game

I should state the red herring
was a pic of a lady prancing
true to life, this is my love
swing to follow contradance

this is not the same as my career
cavorting naked on the stage
in the bloom of college days
shaking what God had made

now I write florid words
about my loves and deepest fears
passion mixed with misery
topped with photos I’ve taken

here’s the crux I’ve explored
a puzzle posted to who I am
spread on the social media
explored by strangers never more

cavorting to the music’s charm
gender blurs when online
even age may be obscured
apples lodged in probing eyes.
