Blog - Four Years of “Poem a Day”

09/24/18 marked four years of writing a poem a day. Since then I’ve written 1,575 poems totaling 203,186 words. It’s been an interesting journey of self-exploration, public sharing, and lots of advocacy for those things I hold dear. To accomplish this I’ve dedicated about an hour and a half each day to writing. Backing that off a little, that’s 1,825 hours. There’s much much more to come in the foreseeable future. I hope you will be there!

I began my daily journey with the poem “Shadows on the Cave Wall”. This was a fitting omen. I’m sharing that first poem below. It’s interesting to see how far I’ve come.


Shadows on the Cave Wall

Black castings of reality
spring from my fire.
Solid impressions of forms
extend from the sun.

Some shadows move
at my command.
Others have an outer life
foreign to my own.

What do I contribute
to this tableau?
My shadow merges
with the sum of shadings.

Are they spirits,
these shadows of reality?
Concrete whispers
echoed in my heart.

Sinister revenants,
unwelcome miasma,
dare I welcome you
to my cave wall?

So I feed the fire
so it may cast
continued shadows
on the cave wall.
