The poem “No Mortal Ever” was inspired by an engraving by Gustave Doré titled “Dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.”

No Mortal Ever

Would mortals dare to ever dream
the visions that make angels weep
normality born of humankind
is not enough to gird the mind

on shores forbidden to the weak
strangeness is not the extreme
instead the masters tempt the fates
knowing rules are theirs to break

twist expectations to exclaim
nothing decent is there to blame
when the board is swept clear
pressing smiles moved to tears

the hourglass will run its course
replace the hours with wickedness
still brave mortals dare to tread
those visions wise ones learn to dread.

The poem “Dark Stories” is about the shared tales that don’t see the light of a prim and proper day.

Dark Stories

Dark stories tell so much more
than escapades that words explore
these scratch the surface in attempts
to find the final consequence

beneath the depths plumbed within
are other layers attached to sin
asking why the lights are dimmed
lest the truth be condemned

these tales are whispered smoke
denied existence in remorse
as they’re shared across the world
no matter what the tomes implore

wishing only that righteousness
inform the actions of all men
even while the narrative
states how truly life is led.

The poem “Empty Eyes” was inspired by a 1940 untitled photo by Aaron Siskind. The source material was an outside of shot of building walls, evoking a human canyon-cave.

Empty Eyes

Canyons filled with empty eyes
silent visionaries knowing all
while keeping secrets of their own
behind staid curtains of the soul

witness to the gods’ downfall
evicted while the cyclone roared
still the walls stood upright
monuments to the contrite

with no regard of what’s beyond
the void containing all the world
this empty echo that resonates
to the chords of sleeping beasts

damning all with vacant hearts
while keeping lairs in the dark
shutters hiding lurking mouths
desiring naught while seeing all.

The poem “Look to Darkness” is a poetic investigation of the nature of personal darkness. Beyond the threatened doom, the gloom is both an ally and a teacher. It becomes the sanity that’s lost when the remainder of the world is proven to be the greater grimness.

Look to Darkness

Look to darkness for a laugh
chuckles pulled from the pain
sadness has a new lease
loneliness in the extreme
their companion is not light
when the absurd is brought forth
to contrast with absent joy
survival discards the empty smile

the void demands something else
on the altar of the felled lives
if existence must proceed
beyond the phantoms of deceit
monsters of direst dreads
provide the truths few accept
except when the veil is dropped
pulled from the rod to the floor

when holiness becomes absent
the profane will take its place
forcing choices among the scraps
some are better than the rest
a sacrifice is brought to bleed
as the basin collects the drops
an offering of darkest taint
extols the pure that it’s replaced.

The poem “All That's Left” is a composite reflection of the very special people I've known. They lived outside the conventions of life. They reminded me that there was more than convention. They gave me insight into how to fully exist even as the world tore them down.

All That's Left
Poem for Day 216 – 20150804

I love you for your gray,
for the way you see in between.
The black and white blinded most.
They thought within their box,
walls high that killed the spirit.
You've shown me there is more,
infinite notes to the cosmic sound
that so few are meant to hear.

I love you for your angst,
for the way you break from us.
Soul tortured but not broken,
smitten by the world revealed,
poisoned by the snake within.
You've shown me how to cry,
how to cleanse the wound,
flooded by the bitter tears.

I love you for your hate,
for the way you fight the world.
Fists against walls of stone,
heart flung at barb wire strands,
you struggled when nobody would.
You've shown me how to strike,
to make my mark against all odds
when pain is passion's fuel.

I love you for your self,
for the way you seek sacrifice.
Wear the vest and pull the cord,
cordite will speak your mind
when the smoke is cleared.
You've shown me the exit,
your life fulfilled on the way out,
clarion call to those still left.

I love you for these reasons,
nothing more and nothing less.
You were too much for this world,
it and you could not same survive,
and now my love is all that's left.
You showed me yourself,
every aspect both good and bad,
and now my love is all that's left.

kokopelle: (Dark God)
A friend posted a meme that said:

-She said "don't get too close.  It's dark inside.  It's where my demons hid.
-And I answered: "Get too close, there is a hell inside of me, it's where your demons can live".

I replied:  I can relate. Fortunately darkness is as darkness does. But woe be me if an attractive hell appears and my demons have a place to roost.

Darkness does have a place in creation. There is a tremendous power stored in the shadow. In the early 2000s I was told that I should be writing. At that time I struggled mightily with dark thoughts. I told myself, "I cannot write of what I know. Who wants to hear about madness?". Now I do write. My own shadow is still there. Now the darkness informs my writing, adding wisdom and insight. There are artists who's works are simultaneously very dark, even as they peers into the depths of the human experience. Sometimes it is difficult to look, read or listen to these creations. This is OK. The artist is creating for themselves and for those who are capable of sharing the vision. Deep down, the darkest of works are created with the mantra of "somebody will see this, somebody will recognize this". The shadow is crucial part of creation. Without the darkness, there cannot be light.

"In the beginning God created heaven and earth." So says Genesis 1:1. I say that God is still creating the heaven and the earth. We stare into the same void. We maintain our sanity and soul by seeing the void as a place of potential. What are we to do on this earth? What is our purpose? Merely create the best you can. On the sixth day, you too will say, "behold, it was very good".
