The poem “Angel for a Day” was inspired by a photo of a person standing in front of a picture of angel wings.

Angel for a Day

To be the angel for a day
fly with the aid of wings
would demand a sacrifice
to put aside the spice of life

in the heights the loss is slight
hidden among the blurred landscape
this prison that one may escape
by virtue of the altitude

if only for the span were perpetude
forever ignoring why most strive
on wings made for evasive flight
turning away from earth’s delights

to be seraph for a time
blinded to angst of men
would be sublime for a day
and then I’d return to play.

The poem “Wisdom Walks” was inspired by the ruminations of the lessons I’ve learned in life.

Wisdom Walks

Wisdom walks the path of folly
the latter a price to be paid
this is how the foolish mortals
approach the realm of perfect bliss

the sins were many in the past
remnants of the human life
embraced in lieu of what could be
because of ignorance we’re deceived

few are worthy to be damned
for small trips outside of bounds
if the gods were more kind
we’d really know right from wrong

by a thought or deed’s transgress
the lines are crossed on the page
stating what could never be
in this world of misery

still the balance can be found
if the ear is opened wide
within the heart that would apply
lessons learned from folly’s plight.

The poem “Between the Lines” is a poetic consideration about religion being the only source of morality. There is consideration that “true” atheists have no morals and are basically rudderless ships void of ethical direction. While I don’t claim to be atheist, the ones that I’m aware of are perfectly capable of leading ethical lives. Meanwhile, atrocities are carried out by those with motivations, and while a religion may temper the outcome, it does not guarantee that harm will not befall others.

Between the Lines

Morality flows between the cracks
stays the hand from evil acts
consider how this comes to be
from dogma’s fear or something else
the former seems to be true
though one may ask what promotes
adherence to a greater good
when the latter also kind

please don’t kill just anyone
taking blood to cure pure lust
with a lack of deity
some would seek a murder spree
this is fated, some would say
no boundaries set by fear embraced
the punitive is all that holds
strong malice from the human heart

this ascends the iceberg’s tip
so many more sins now await
no longer held by a dread
of what may happen when we’re dead
perhaps you spot a flaw in this
that some people can resist
running wild with no regard
even if they have no god

those other sins may intrude
the ones that are identity
not immoral when affirmed
outside the boundaries of a book
commandments laid at our feet
demanding more than few can meet
some restricted to belief
the others shared by decent men

more than worry of the law
instead a sense of what is right
sprung from souls that conspire
to steer their life between the lines
empathy becomes the tool
a golden rule to guide the fool
to conclusions that serve all
morality to fill a life.

The poem “Like Icarus” references the mythology of Icarus, the man who fell to earth after his waxen wings melted by flying too close to the sun. The speaker of the poem is foretelling his fall from debaucherous ways, by route of wrongful passions or misdirected emotions.

Like Icarus

Like Icarus I will fly
sometimes I ascend too high
buoyed by attraction’s bliss
or too low by lustful quests
steering to the depths below
bob of body, line of loin
all of this I'll pursue
wings spread to find my way
fire and water foreshadow doom.

Passions blaze from fire's embrace
hot to merge, too bold for good
longing only for revelry
the party all may now attend
excluding kin of morality
inhibitions cast aside
debauchery will be the flare
melting the wax of my wings.

Emotions rule from water's flood
mist kicked up as loves unfurled
in lusty forms of desire's quest
devotion absent with craving's search
hungers spring form from base feelings
not looking back, only front
with sad outcome to my flight
leaden soaking of my wings.

Brother Icarus you were my guide
with fates shared in our time
flying high or flying low
each has a due gods will accuse
Icarus we’ll race to see
who will crash to earth again
though in my case I’ll remain
in the pits of hell that day.

The lyrics “Trans-Mortality-Morality” are an editorial statement of some religion's fascination with the beyond and the fallen nature of this world. While their number is few, their profile is everywhere in this electronically connected world. Some of these same people are heavily critical of people who are experiencing other trans identity crisis. The irony is palpable.

Trans-Mortality-Morality
Bonus Poem for Day 170 – 20150619

I've I were a bit deader,
if I were a bit better,
that would be the red letter day,
best of the worlds cause I'm a trans.

This living is merely temporary,
something I do before I'm dead.
Forced on me by the evil one,
my place is dead by the one's side.
I'm sinning like there's no end,
but that's not who I really am.
The evil one tricked me one day,
led astray from my real purity.

I'm a trans in this mortal world,
not meant to be amongst living ones.
I'm a trans in this evil world,
soul too enlightened for the like of you.

I'll bide my time waiting patiently,
knowing that bus will find me.
It has a gift, my termination,
lifting me to the arms of the one.
Avoidance of all is my goal,
perfection just out of reach.
I will become pure as driven snow,
only my humanity left to besmirch me.

I'm a trans in this mortal world,
not meant to be amongst living ones.
I'm a trans in this evil world,
soul too enlightened for the like of you.

I'm a trans, just a trans,
this I will gladly admit and embrace.
Mortality, morality,
just a trans in this too mortal world.

I had a realization late last week. There are situations in my life in which I am just "way too nice". There are times that I seem horribly cold or selfish, and there are times that my heart bleeds more than seems appropriate. My realization shown light on why this is so. Warning...there is pretty brutal and personal stuff behind the lj cut...

From Dilbert:

Dilbert: Why is it unethical for humans to clone themselves?
Trashman: Morality is based on accepted norms and accepted norms are based on morality.
Dilbert: It's self causing?
Trashman: Ironically so.
