The poem “Chords Evoke” is written about the partners that I dance with repetitively. I reflected on commonality of these wonderful people, and realized that I can comfortably talk to them off of the dance floor.

Chords Evoke

The chords evoke the opening
I'll look for you, you for me
to find our hands met in the sound
intentions same as souls consort.
This is not a romantic quest
Cupid's arrows do fall somewhere else
instead I look for common ground
seeking comfort in the sound's surround.

I'll admit I've danced before
perhaps you have, it matters not
what came before had its time
the good and bad and the sublime.
To hold you close is not enough
to know your mind is my desire
to view emotions you hold close
words are shared as I rejoice.

Into your arms I've finally stepped
a void is no more in my heart
to be filled by close consort
to be led by whispers sought.
Connections made where space once was
emptiness that we longed to fill
to another dance we’ll now meet
the chords invite our joined repeat.

The birthday of one of my favorite dance partners inspired me to write the poem “Partner”.

Partner

Partner of perfect grace,
extension of my dancing whims,
equal in creation's blush,
how I miss your hand tonight.

Beauty is your following,
captured by the all you are.
I am seduced by elegance,
in rapture to all of this.

To dance is not enough
when two must combine.
You and I match step to step,
two in audience to our bliss.

Others cannot now compare
when they seek to take your place.
I spend my time in their arms,
looking forward to your return.

There is never enough time,
how it seems to only fly,
when we celebrate motion shared
on the dance floor, two as one.

I'd bide my time in this place,
waiting for partner's glad embrace.
Again we'll dance in God's sight
lifted high on angel's wings.

One of the things that I love about Swing dancing is the ability to focus on a single partner for a period of time. There are no distractions. There is only you, your partner, and the music facilitating the encounter. My poem “Sweet Danseuse” is about such an encounter.

Sweet Danseuse
Poem for Day 128 – 20150508

I'll be your lead, you my partner,
we'll follow the music's tune,
the familiar beat, flowing as one.
DJ, you're the man on the job,
you've picked the best from the batch,
the one we always want to hear.

Swing out, leave for a time,
find your personal dance delight,
just come back, find my deft hand.
We could dance this in our sleep,
the words as familiar as our moves,
soft to ear, sensual to the touch.

Cozy up to my side, don't be shy.
We'll sway to the beat, to and fro,
heaven on earth, you by my side.
We'll do some slow side by side,
move into a close embrace,
tucked in tight, with nowhere to go.

Time flies, emotions combine,
not enough time with one so pretty,
the most beautiful none will deny.
I'll be your lead, dance's guide,
for this musical interlude too brief,
my partner, my sweet danseuse.

I'm at a point in my dancing that I do have moments when I wonder “how did get here with such a marvelous partner?”. My partners WANT to dance with me. Very Talking Heads “Once in a Lifetime” stuff.

Dance Dream Again
Poem for Day 121 – 20150502

I had that dream again,
the one that I welcome,
but find most disturbed.
I had that dream tonight,
and I'll tell it to you.

It is one of dance,
and I am to be the lead,
with you a partner in crime.
I'd be with no other,
but what I am to do?

How did I get here?
How do I respond to beauty
in my arms, couples at my side?
How do I dance, can I dance,
with one as lovely as you?

The others know what to do,
leads cajoling the magical moves.
Followers responding with glee,
consummate masters of their destiny,
and I am just plain confused.

You are beauty incarnate,
Venus herself would be jealous.
One of such many in this dance,
but the first amongst equals,
sheltered safe in my arms.

But wait, I know this song,
this melody comes to mind.
My feet remember familiar steps,
to guide you by my side
to be your dancing paramour.

I dreamt of dancing,
fleet of foot, light of heart,
with a lovely lady by my side.
People around, focusing me,
with you in my arms complete.

Contradancing is a very social form of dancing. You have a partner throughout an entire dance, but they are with you during an unsatisfying fraction of the dance time. The rest of the time is spent with neighbors or traveling as the 64 beats of music are discharged. Some couples stretch out their time together by replacing the caller's motions with selfishly cuddly moves. Others just suffer, and this is the subject of “Dancing in Slow Motion”.

Dancing in Slow Motion
Poem for Day 055 – 20150225

We are dancing in slow motion,
you accompanying another,
will you ever be in my arms?

The air carries your scent,
a fragrance of your beauty,
mocking me in my solitude.

Distance so short, almost touching,
I rail against the interval,
a chasm of separation between.

I see every hair, fleck of eye color,
and still we are disunited
segregated by space, mocked by time.

We are to be joined I intone,
the music's tempo matching my angst,
as beats thrum in stretched frequency.

Time is the traitor, forever my foe,
so quickly it took you from me,
and now it holds you far away.

We are dancing in slow motion,
an eternity lived in moments.
Ah, at last you are here again.
